EXTRAS
- Scatterbrained, changes topics easily with little regard for making sense.
- Hates structure, especially in the small town, so when he pretends to be a stage hand he's quite good, but doesn't follow the time or cues as well as he should.
- Travelled to a lot of places, picks up facts from everywhere and loves to show off by telling them, this is when he's most confident.
- He always wanted to explore more of the world and he loves doing that but his past still lingers in his head.
- Can't speak in "musical towns", so he takes to speaking to Oak and Ela through face and hand gestures as well as writings replies to them in his book or on props

RELATIONS
Empathises with Oakley being an outsider and not fitting in.
Relates to Lea for wanting to explore and rebel.

COLOURS
White/Black = Feels the same as Oakley
All Black = Stage-hand, meant to be unseen

Browns+Greens = Fresh, new beginning, earthy tones, travelling, laid back
Stripes = movement/travel

Ginger = kinda dorky, outsider, rare-ish
Curls = Unkempt, no brill cream for Marco, messy, "rebel"

PRACTICE // Figures

Practice Stuff

Ref. from Andrew Loomis' "Figure Drawing For All It's Worth"

MUSIC // Playlist

Americana/travel Playlist

Not so much the broadway or musical side of the story, more the in-between discovering new musical towns, and more driving in old cars across the country or whatever

STORY // Short and Long

TITLE

Off The Track

(SHORT) SUMMARY
After failing to be a great leading man that he was expected to be in his living musical, Oakley Colton ventures out of his small town to find a different beat to sing and dance to.

Interesting Character Questions

CHARACTER QUESTIONS (POSSIBILITIES)

Char. Design - All - Costume - "on the road" versions

When things don't go right, I stick to costume design.

"travelling" outfits, after they've left the little town, so almost completely devoid of red and black

Focus on:

Oakley:
Not sure about PANTS colour, maybe navy blue?
blue gingham + red = dorothy
red, kept from town, hasn't completely left
cardigan = preppy look
coat instead?? too high class?
blue = passive
(new pose, more in character)

Ela:
inspired by Roman Holiday but with more of a dramatic spin to the white shirt/big brown skirt combo
"dramatic" design similar to 1950's sewing pattern I found
scarf = gives more movement, keeps warm, reference to scarf in her "town outfit"
yellow = energetic, exciting
socks = on the move, preppy
gloves?? too high class?
long sleeves ruins shape

Marco:
more relaxed version of previous outfit, set on what he likes
lines = movement

helmets: extra helmets for passengers Oakley and Ela

Set Design - Experiment

An oak tree for Oakley.

It's an interesting look...but not really the look I'm going for, or the scope, feels very cramped and hasn't got everything I was planing in it...so, not sure on the success of this one, but it's a start.

I did use a lot of photo referencing and use of different brushes to create different effects.

Set Design - Mood Board

A collection of ideas that I'd like to use for the small musical town (probably could use a name).
I'd like to use a combination of theatre sets and props and forests, for this I'm looking at the past stage designs I've posted as well as outdoor stage plays (eg. Shakespeare in the Park) to see how it incorporates the two.
I'd like for the town to centre, or predominantly display an oak tree with lighting rigs and rails going in and out through the branches.
Sadly, I'm awful at drawing trees, but Oakley's name would seem a bit meaningless without it...

Char. Design - Marco - Facial Expressions

What a stupid design, arrrrgh.
His nose and hair are both hard to replicate...

Char. Design. - All - Costume - Colouring

Added Accessories and Colouring

Focus:
Marco: Added helmet

Oakley: Colouring, making the red stand out more

Ela: Added neck tie, added shoes, colouring (simplified),
 two stripes/two sets of buttons = second/understudy

Char. Design - "Polo" - Style

Drawing dogs is hard.
 Especially little ones, I keep finding refs. for large breeds which isn't helpful at all.
But I'll persevere because I always pictured Marco with a tag-along stray dog, with a kinda "Toto" feel/reference.
Calling it "Polo" for lack of a much much better name, for now.

Focus On:
Style
Proportions
Colours
Markings
Living situations

Char. Design - Oakley - Facial Expressions

Holy hell, this is hard...keeping the "essence" of a character in different moods looked fun but no, not really.

I think when I have a better grasp of anatomy and face structure, I'll be able to do this really nicely and quickly.
