Quick Sketch - Marco + Oakley, Floor

Quick sketch of Marco and Oakley in more "in character" poses

Oakley: possible travel outfit, looser, lighter, yellow = bright and optimistic, blue = still passive, at odds
Marco: first outift, possibly might have a dog to travel with?, w/ book small enough to fit in pants pocket to have at all times

I need to work on being more comfortable with anatomy thouuuuugh

Char. Design - All - Costume (Basic) (Town Outfit)

I wanted to do some costume stuff but I didn't want to fuss around with anatomy right now, so for now I'm doing a more "vector" based look for costume design.

Oakley
I always pictured red being part of the people who live in the small town, to go with the big red curtain at the entrance, so I think I'd like that to be part of Oakley's costume. It feels odd though...like, thinking colour theory wise and what colours mean, and for Oakley red is kinda opposite to his doormat personality (which is why I tried out blue as well), but I guess that would emphasis how he doesn't fit in with his town.

Also I think they'll change costume when they start travelling more to something more casual, and I think the clothes he picks them would be colours that reflect him better.

(Town Outfit, if I don't use just red, I think this would be a nice template for the extras and other town male characters to wear)

(Town Outfit 2, in blue, for Oakley only)

(3, a combo, bit of a Dorothy Wizard of Oz vibe going on here)

(Variations on 1)

Lea (...I'm thinking of changing her name to Ela)

As the "Understudy" she's just going to be a variation of whatever Oakley wears in the town, and outside the town opposite to what Oakley wears. So hers is going to be the last costume to do, but for now a possible outfit to go with Oakley's red, black and white with overalls look

Marco
Arrrrrrgh, this one's annoying, but I think it needs to look more down to earth then the other two, and show that he likes to travel and that he's rebellious.
However, the rebellious "Beat Generation" of the time was namely wearing a lot of black, which makes him look like he already a member of the town. (And when he's a temporary Stage-hand he's going to be in all black...I think he's going to have 3 outfits to do)

Char. Design - Marco - Hair + Style

Damn...i like this style much more than what i was doing last night : /
It feels free-er to work with, more Disney like too, and muuuuch quicker

At the moment, i'm happier with how Marco's coming along but I'll give Oakley a go with this looser style and that should improve that aspect a bit

Focus on:
Hair styles
Extras (glasses, freckles)

This face shape and nose is heavily referenced...I really like it, and i wanna search for more examples so i can figure it out better and put my own spin on it i think
 Focus on:
Skin tones
Hair colours
Line work colours

Set Design - Small Town - V. simple

this is ONLY for reference later, cause this is hideous,
just needed to quickly get it out of my head

Char. Design - Oakley - Face + Style

Further design for Oakley's face

Focus on:
Eye style
Hair style

 Focus on:
Skin tones
Hair colours

Focus on:
Trying out thick line style (takes a while, and a steady hand)
Trying out hair swirls

Char. Design - Oakley - Various

It's not totally correct or right but I've officially started designing!

Quick Thoughts for Oakley's face
Focus on:
Hair (Keep as soft curves, curl in or out?)
Nose Shape (no idea)
Eyes
Adam's Apple (focus on singing)
Face Length/Shape (probably longer next time)

Some Debating Over Eye Style
Either normal Disney style with frames around pupils
or
More classic 50's style, also Fred Moore style

Proportions
Focus on:
Legs

(This is really out of character, but I wanted to look at exaggerating leg length, I've gotta feel more daring and keep going with that I think)
(The pants make him look way too old)

Mood Board - Oakley

I can understand if this makes no sense at all, but these are a collection of pics that remind me of his character...and soon i'll try to combine it all together and hopefully he'll look great...hopefully, gah

Video - Disney - All The Cats Join In

a short film done by Disney in 1946.

I saw it in my Disney Archive's book (I have three, and they should come in really handy later) and thought the time period would relate to my project so I looked it up and watched it.

It was...okay. The sketches of the dancing poses I already have should be great to use for reference but the film style I thought was a bit bland.
And the characters have creepy as hell big black dots for eyes...not sure if I like that.
And it was a bit sexist in its own special 40's way but I do love how they draw the girls' skirts, they're really bouncy and free flowing that works really nicely with the dancing.
